The Road That Led Me Here
Growing up in Fort Nelson, British Columbia, I developed a love for the outdoors and a sense of adventure that has stayed with me ever since. Whether it was quadding, fishing, hunting, or heading out on a road trip, I’ve always enjoyed exploring new places and seeing what lies beyond the familiar. Over the years, that curiosity has grown into a passion for travel, discovering different cultures, and experiencing places in a more personal and meaningful way.
My interest in travel goes back more than 20 years, when I first considered pursuing a career in the travel industry. As life would have it, I took a different path and found myself working in insurance. What I initially thought would be a temporary job turned into a career spanning more than two decades.
But my love for travel never faded. Somewhere along the way, I began thinking more seriously about how I wanted to spend the years ahead. After more than 20 years in insurance, I decided it was finally time to pursue a passion I'd put on hold for far too long. That decision opened the door to travel advising, along with my growing interest in storytelling, meeting people, and discovering what makes each place unique.
Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to explore some incredible places, including Hawaii, Costa Rica, Mexico, New Zealand, and many parts of the United States. Most recently, I spent two months travelling throughout Europe, visiting several countries and experiencing their different cultures, histories, and ways of life. I’ve also spent seasons living in Mexico, which has given me a deeper appreciation for local traditions, small businesses, and the people behind them. Through all these experiences, I’ve come to realize that what makes a destination truly memorable isn't just the places you visit, but the people you meet and the stories you discover along your journeys.
That’s really where the idea for “Why Here” started. I realized there are so many travel destinations in the world, but what interested me most were the stories behind them — the local businesses, the hidden gems, the passion people put into what they do, and the experiences that make a place feel unforgettable. I wanted to create something that connected travel with storytelling in a more meaningful and personal way.
Alongside travel and storytelling, I’ve always loved creative projects. I enjoy sewing (still learning and definitely not an expert yet haha), and I’ve recently started learning leatherwork as well. I also design custom shirts for customers for a business I help operate in Mexico with my partner. I’m also a lover of baking and enjoy anything that allows me to create something personal, meaningful, and unique.
Also a huge animal lover and have always had a soft spot for dogs and cats. Boxers and Boston Terriers were my more recent furry family members, and they’ll always hold a special place in my heart.
In addition to Why Here, I also work independently in travel planning and helping people create experiences and trips that fit what they’re truly looking for. While separate from the Why Here storytelling platform, both are connected by the same passion — helping people discover places, experiences, and connections that matter.
Whether you’re reaching out to share a story, collaborate, feature a business, or start planning a trip, I’d love to connect.
